What materials are available through Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Answer

Most libraries are willing to provide:

  • Books.
  • PDFs of book or eBook chapters.
  • PDFs of articles in journals, anthologies, and proceedings from symposia and conferences.
  • Theses and dissertations, when not on microfilm or in Proquest Dissertations &Theses.
  • Microfilm.

Most libraries will NOT lend:

  • Entire eBooks, because license agreements restrict lending between libraries.
  • Rare or valuable material, including manuscripts.
  • Typescript doctoral dissertations when available on microfilm.
  • Reference or other non-circulating materials.
  • Material in high demand at the lending library, especially new books and best-sellers.

UAB Libraries will NOT accept requests for:

  • Textbooks available for purchase at the bookstore.
  • Materials on reserve at UAB Libraries.
  • Materials owned by the UAB Libraries but in circulation at the time of request.
  • Items that would violate copyright guidelines (e.g. scanned copy of an entire book).
